How Satellites And Machine Learning Are Being Used To Detect Plastic In The Ocean
Using the satellite data, researchers trained a machine-learning algorithm to identify the light signal of floating plastic by releasing a plastic float off the coast of Greece and obtaining the associated light signal data from the satellites. The researched used this light data to teach the algorithm to associate certain NIR light signals with floating plastic debris. Similarly, they also taught the algorithm to distinguish between plastic and natural materials such as seaweed, driftwood, and seafoam.
World Bank and UN launch AI-based mechanism to prevent famine
in 2019, The World Bank, the United Nations and partners launched the Famine Action Mechanism (FAM), the first global initiative dedicated to preventing famine. The mechanism, with the support of global technology companies, including Microsoft, Google and Amazon Web Services, seeks to change the status quo of delayed response and to move toward famine prevention, preparedness and early action, said the organizers in a joint press release. The initiative will use the predictive power of data to trigger funding through appropriate financing instruments, working closely with existing systems, they said.
Huawei created StorySign - the world’s first literacy platform for deaf children.
A really inspiring example of how corporations can use technology to empower and enrich people’s lives, and the transformative power that AI possesses to extend the boundaries of what is humanly possible. Huawei used AI and augmented reality to create StorySign.
Learning to read can be difficult for any child, but for small children who are severely or profoundly deaf, it can be an overwhelming challenge. Huawei's technology helped to open the realm of books to 32 million deaf children around the globe and introduce them to a world of imagination, curiosity and creativity.
